The BBC Is Merging Its Comedy, Arts and Classical Commissioning Teams. A Seventh Round of Cuts Goes With It.
Estimated reading time: 6 minutes
In short. BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips told staff on 22 October 2026 that the corporation will merge its television and audio commissioning teams for comedy, arts and classical music from January 2027, as part of a plan to close around 100 roles in the content division by the end of the current financial year [[1]] [[2]] [[3]]. Commissioning spend falls by GBP80 million, with 100 to 150 hours of original television and 350 to 400 hours of audio cut by March 2028 [[3]]. The ledger logs a loss of 100, graded ANNOUNCED, status proposed, region UK-wide, sector media. This is the seventh departmental slice of the BBC's corporation-wide savings programme this ledger has logged since August; added together, the seven total 541, against the up-to-2,000 figure the corporation announced in April.
What Kate Phillips told staff
Three genres, one combined team, from January 2027. Phillips is bringing television and audio commissioning together for comedy, arts and classical music: comedy chief Chris Sussman takes the genre across both TV and radio, with Radio 4's comedy and entertainment commissioning editor Julia McKenzie joining his team; Suzy Klein, head of arts and classical music TV, takes on audio and video commissioning for arts, with radio counterpart Matthew Dodd joining her; and Sam Jackson, controller of BBC Radio 3 and the Proms, takes on audio and video commissioning for classical music [[1]]. Her own framing of the change was about structure, not cost: "This is about creating more opportunities for commissioners to collaborate, share ideas and develop the strongest possible content for audiences wherever they are" [[1]] [[3]].
The job losses sit inside that restructuring rather than being announced as a separate figure: around 100 roles across the content unit, to go by the end of the BBC's current financial year [[2]] [[3]]. A wider commissioning-spend cut of GBP80 million and a reduction in originated hours, 100 to 150 hours of television and 350 to 400 hours of audio, run to March 2028, a longer and separate timeline from the jobs figure itself [[3]]. AI and automation are not mentioned anywhere in the reporting of this announcement checked for this piece.
A distinct cut, not a restated one
This is BBC content and commissioning, not BBC News. Three days earlier this ledger logged BBC News's own net closure of "just over 100" roles, confirmed by director of news Rachel Jupp on 20 October, alongside the closure of BBC Three and the BBC Scotland television channel as linear services. That is a separate division, with its own staff memo and its own savings target, from the commissioning merger Phillips announced on 22 October. The two are not the same cut counted twice.
The running total this ledger has logged
541 confirmed so far, against a figure of up to 2,000. This is the seventh time since August that this ledger has logged a named slice of the BBC's corporation-wide cuts programme, first disclosed in April 2026 as up to 2,000 jobs across the organisation to save 10 percent of costs over three years:
- BBC Scotland, 60 posts, 20 August 2026.
- BBC Sport, a net 36, 23 September 2026.
- BBC Wales, 45 full-time equivalent roles, 24 September 2026.
- BBC Media Tech, 110 compulsory redundancies, 28 September 2026.
- BBC Local, around 90 posts, 28 September 2026.
- BBC News, just over 100, 20 October 2026.
- BBC content and commissioning, around 100, 22 October 2026.
Add the firm figures together and the total is 541. As with every prior slice, this row is logged separately because it is its own announcement, to its own staff, with its own number; the corporation-wide 1,800 to 2,000 figure is deliberately not logged on its own, to avoid counting the same job twice once its department's turn comes round.
What happens next in this ledger
Watch for whether the roughly 100 content-unit roles firm up into a more precise number once the merger takes effect in January 2027, the same way BBC News's "just over 100" has not yet resolved into an exact digit. Watch too for the GBP80 million commissioning-spend cut and the hours-reduction targets running to March 2028: those numbers describe a longer and larger change than the jobs figure alone captures, and are worth their own check as that date approaches. And watch the gap itself: 541 against 2,000, six months after the corporation named its own ceiling, with two-thirds of its three-year savings window still to run.
