Dundee Round Three Ends at 154 Jobs, Not the 190 First Announced. The Principal Now Says No More.

In short. The University of Dundee opened round three of its redundancy programme in June 2026, proposing around 190 job cuts. The consultation has now closed: staff learned on 25 August 2026 that the figure going to redundancy is 154 FTE roles, with 38 new roles created for redeployment [1]. The ledger's logged row is corrected from 190 to 154; the correction is recorded in the corrections log. Principal Nigel Seaton says he does not expect further redundancy rounds [2]. UCU members strike for 25 days from 21 September regardless.

What changed. In June this ledger logged Dundee's third round at 190, the figure the university gave when it opened collective consultation. Consultations do not end where they start, and this one did not: the formal proposal had in fact been 187 full-time-equivalent posts, and after ten weeks of consultation, staff who had been told they were at risk learned on 25 August that the confirmed figure is 154 [1]. The university also created 38 new roles as part of the restructure, offering potential redeployment to some of those affected. A voluntary redundancy scheme covering the 154 opened the following day, 26 August. The University Court met on 8 September to receive the consultation outcome and was asked to approve the voluntary redundancies, with permission also sought for compulsory ones if volunteers fall short; what the Court actually decided has not been separately reported, and this piece does not assume an outcome it cannot cite.

How the ledger corrects it

The row is updated from 190 to 154, not added to as a second event. This is the same redundancy round the ledger already logged, now concluded rather than proposed, so the correction changes the existing row rather than creating a new one; adding a second row would have double counted the loss on the scoreboard, which fell by 36 as a result of this correction. The 190 was not a mistake when it was logged: it was the announced figure, graded ANNOUNCED, exactly as this ledger's rules require, and the original piece stands unedited as the record of what the university said in June. What has happened since is the process working as this site's grading exists to describe: an announced number and a concluded one are different facts, and the gap between round three's proposed 187 and its confirmed 154 is smaller than round two's gap between a target of up to 180 and 143 approvals, which the original piece also logged. Dundee's rounds keep landing under their own targets.

The pledge worth holding the university to

Interviewed as the round closed, Principal Nigel Seaton told the Courier that colleagues "should not fear there will be any other redundancies exercised in the future in order to put the university on its own financial footing" [2]. He said future savings would come through managing operating costs rather than further job cuts. That is a specific, checkable claim from the person who runs the institution, made after three rounds and 154 more redundancies than the two the ledger already had on record. It is logged here as exactly that: a promise from a named decision-maker, not a certainty. If a fourth round opens, this ledger will say so plainly.

The claim also sits inside a condition Dundee is not fully in control of. A rescue package of up to 40 million pounds from the Scottish Funding Council came with restrictions on further compulsory redundancies until the university produces a three-year recovery strategy showing a credible route to financial sustainability [3]. Seaton's pledge and the funding council's condition point the same way; neither is this ledger's finding, and both are logged as what the people who made them said.

What happens next regardless

None of this has stopped industrial action. UCU members at Dundee strike for 25 days over five weeks, every weekday from Monday 21 September to Friday 23 October, in a dispute that predates round three and includes the threat of compulsory redundancy the university has not yet ruled out [1]. Whether the Court's 8 September approval included permission for compulsory redundancies, whether any are used, and whether Seaton's no-more-cuts pledge survives the university's next reporting cycle are all facts this ledger does not have yet. Round two's gap between target and delivery was on the record before round three closed; round three's is now too, and round four, if there is one, will be held to the same standard.
