Flutter Entertainment Is Cutting Up to 1,400 Jobs. Nobody Will Say How Many Are in the UK.

In short. Flutter Entertainment, owner of Paddy Power, Betfair and Sky Bet, told staff and filed with the NYSE on Tuesday 20 October 2026 that up to 1,400 roles will go, about 15 to 16 percent of its combined UK and Ireland division of roughly 9,000 staff [1]. Leeds and Dublin are both named; further unquantified roles at hubs in Malta, Portugal, Romania and Gibraltar are also affected [2]. No source checked gives a UK-only figure. The ledger logs a loss of 1,400, graded ANNOUNCED, status proposed, region UK-wide, with that combined-country caveat on the record.

What Flutter told the market

Flutter's own account of why is specific and arithmetical: this year's UK Budget raised Remote Gaming Duty from 21 percent to 40 percent and set Remote Betting Duty rising from 15 percent to 25 percent, and the company says it "cannot fully absorb a rise of this magnitude without reducing our fixed cost base" [1]. Flutter puts the hit to 2027 earnings at $540 million [2]. The cuts are "subject to legal notice and employee consultation requirements," meaning nothing here is concluded; the 1,400 is a ceiling the company has given itself room to come in under, not a confirmed headcount [1].

AI is not mentioned anywhere in Flutter's statement or in either source checked here. This is a tax story, not an automation one: the company names a specific government policy, a specific rate change and a specific earnings number, and leaves no gap for a different cause to fill.

The number this ledger cannot get a clean answer to

Flutter's workforce in the UK and Ireland is reported at around 9,000, and 1,400 is roughly 15 to 16 percent of that combined figure [1]. Dublin alone is reported to account for 240 of the 1,400 [2]. Beyond that one figure, nothing checked here breaks the remaining 1,160 down by country, let alone by the Leeds office specifically, where Flutter's sister operation Sky Bet alone employs around 1,400 people under the same roof at 4 Wellington Place, a coincidence of numbers worth flagging and nothing more; that headcount belongs to a different part of the group and is not itself affected by anything reported here.

This ledger logged the same problem once before. Reach plc's 225-job cut in September spanned UK and Irish titles with no breakdown given anywhere, and the figure went on the ledger as the group total with that gap stated plainly rather than hidden [3]. Flutter's 1,400 gets the same treatment here for the same reason: a company reporting a combined-country figure is not this ledger inventing a UK number it cannot support, and rounding it down to guess a British share would be exactly that invention. The honest version of this story is that a UK jobs tracker has been handed a number it cannot fully attribute to the UK, and says so.

How the ledger logs it

A loss of 1,400, graded ANNOUNCED, status proposed, sector gambling, region UK-wide. The region is logged as UK-wide rather than split by nation or by Leeds specifically, because the underlying figure itself is not split. AI is logged as not-raised; nothing in Flutter's own reasoning touches it. If Flutter later publishes a UK-only number, through a trading update, a results filing or the consultation's outcome, this entry updates to carry it, and this ledger's first rule applies in the other direction too: an unbroken-down figure is not evidence of anything smaller than it says, only of something this ledger cannot yet count precisely.

What happens next in this ledger

Three things to watch: whether the consultation produces a UK-specific number, whether Flutter's next trading update quantifies the Leeds office's share, and whether the tax-rise framing survives contact with Flutter's full-year results, due in the new year, when the $540 million EBITDA hit it is forecasting either shows up or does not.
