M&S Says Its New Robot Warehouse Will Employ 600 People. Right Now It Has Hired None of Them.

In short. Marks & Spencer began recruiting on 28 October 2026 for a new, fully automated fashion distribution centre in Lichfield, Staffordshire: a 437,000 sq ft warehouse due to open in 2027 [1]. The company says the site will employ 600 people once fully operational. For now, just over 70 management, operational and specialist vacancies are live [2]. The ledger logs a gain of 600, graded ANNOUNCED, status promised, region West Midlands, ai_cited: not-raised, with a review due in twelve months to see how many of those 600 roles actually exist.

What happened

M&S opened its careers site on 28 October 2026 for the first wave of jobs at a new distribution hub in Lichfield: a 437,000 sq ft automated warehouse built to handle fashion stock, with the retailer's own target of 600 employees once it is fully running [1]. The site is not open yet; it is due to start operating in 2027. What exists today is a recruitment drive for the first roles needed to get it there: more than 70 vacancies across management, warehouse operations and specialist technician posts [2].

David James, M&S's supply chain and logistics director for fashion, home and beauty, said: "Our new Lichfield hub will mean we can better serve our customers, delivering M&S fashion faster than ever before" [1]. The company is recruiting in stages; more roles are expected to open in the coming months as the build progresses toward launch.

M&S is making a second, smaller commitment in the same city at the same time: a separate 15,800 sq ft foodhall at St John's Grange, Baker Way, due to open in March 2027 and expected to create 70 local jobs, with interest registration open now rather than live vacancies [2]. That is a distinct site and a distinct figure from the distribution hub, logged on this ledger as its own row; it sits well below the threshold for its own article.

How the ledger logs it

600 jobs, graded ANNOUNCED, status promised. This is one employer committing to one named site with one stated opening date, which is exactly the test this ledger applies to decide whether a hiring commitment counts toward the running gains total or sits in the promise register only as a diffuse ambition: Lichfield clears it, the way Isembard's single Southwark site did and the National Wealth Fund's economy-wide 130,000 did not. That means 600 appears in the "gains promised, not yet delivered" line on the scoreboard, and in the promise register with review dates twelve and twenty-four months out, but not in "jobs created, evidenced." The only part of this story currently evidenced is the number of vacancies actually posted, a little over 70, and even those are postings, not hires.

AI is not mentioned anywhere in the announcement; the site's selling point is automation generally, in service of faster fashion delivery, not an AI system replacing roles that already existed. There is no comparable loss to net this against: nothing checked for this article found the 600 framed as a replacement for jobs cut elsewhere. It reads as new capacity at a new site.

What happens next

Two dates matter here. The first is whenever M&S actually opens the Lichfield hub in 2027 and someone counts how many of the promised 600 people are on the payroll; this ledger will check then, not take the company's word for it now. The second is the hiring itself between now and then: if the roles stay at a trickle of specialist and management posts rather than building toward the full number, that gap between target and delivery is exactly what the promise register exists to make visible rather than let quietly disappear.
