Two Factories on the Same Road in Motherwell Are Closing. One Decision Is Already Made.
Estimated reading time: 5 minutes
In short. Resideo confirmed on 21 October 2026, after a concluded consultation, that it is closing its Newhouse manufacturing site in North Lanarkshire and moving production to two other Resideo factories in Europe, Brno in the Czech Republic and Nagykanizsa in Hungary [1]. 116 jobs are affected. At the site next door, Honeywell proposed the same day to close its own facility, moving work primarily to Poole in England; its consultation with the 91 staff concerned has not yet opened, and starts 5 November [2]. The ledger logs Resideo's 116 as ANNOUNCED, status consultation-concluded, and Honeywell's 91 as ANNOUNCED, status proposed, both region Scotland, ai_cited: not-raised. Neither announcement was caught by this ledger's daily searches when it happened; both are logged now, nine days after the fact.
What happened
Resideo and Honeywell occupy adjoining sites on the Newhouse industrial estate near Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, part of a cluster of plants making heating and building-control equipment that has supplied the area with manufacturing jobs for decades. Resideo makes thermostats, boiler and heat pump components, timers and heating controls there; on 21 October 2026 the company told staff that, following a consultation process already run, it would move that production to Brno in the Czech Republic and Nagykanizsa in Hungary, citing lower operating costs at those sites [1]. 116 jobs go with the work.
Because the consultation had already run its course by the time the decision was announced, this is not a proposal still open to challenge; it is a confirmed closure with no departure date yet attached. That distinction matters for how this ledger counts it: 116 sits in the "losses confirmed for a future date" category on the scoreboard, not in "jobs gone, evidenced," because nobody has actually left yet.
On the same day, the neighbouring Honeywell site announced a closure of its own, with work moving primarily to Poole in England and 91 jobs at risk [2]. Unlike Resideo, Honeywell's consultation has not started: it opens on 5 November, which puts its 91 jobs in the earlier, more reversible category of "proposed," below the 100-job threshold this ledger uses to decide whether a loss gets its own article, and short of Resideo's own figure besides.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham called the closures "unforgivable" and said "Scotland can't continue to haemorrhage manufacturing jobs. It's simply unsustainable" [3]. Locally, Unite industrial officer Sam Ritchie said the union was meeting the area's MP to push for coordinated action from the UK and Scottish governments, and Airdrie and Shotts MP Kenneth Stevenson said he was "deeply disappointed," drawing a comparison with manufacturing closures in the area in the 1990s [4].
How the ledger logs it
Two rows, not one, because two different employers made two different decisions on two different timelines, even though they sit on the same road. Resideo: 116 jobs, ANNOUNCED grade (a company statement reported by trade press, not a filing), status consultation-concluded, because the consultation itself is over and the closure is confirmed even though no one has actually gone yet. Honeywell: 91 jobs, ANNOUNCED, status proposed, because its consultation with staff has not even started. Neither figure has a Gazette notice behind it, and neither should: these are planned relocations of production, not insolvencies. AI is not mentioned in either announcement; the stated reason throughout is the cost of operating in Scotland against two cheaper plants elsewhere in Europe, and for Honeywell, against Poole.
Both jobs were announced on 21 October, nine days before this piece. Neither turned up in this ledger's searches on the day, or in the days that followed, until a wider sweep caught them this session. That is a discovery failure worth naming rather than quietly fixing: a story this size, at two named sites with a jobs figure attached from the first day, should not take over a week to reach a public ledger that exists specifically to catch it. It is logged now rather than left out, on the same principle that put Whitbread's 3,800 on this site five months late in October rather than never.
What happens next
Honeywell's consultation runs from 5 November; the number that comes out the other end could move, and this ledger will update the row rather than leave 91 standing as a final figure. Resideo's 116 is more settled, since the consultation is already closed, but still needs a departure date before it moves from "confirmed for a future date" into "jobs gone, evidenced." Worth watching too: whether the joint UK/Scottish government approach Unite is asking for produces anything concrete, or whether, as with several of this ledger's other Scottish manufacturing losses this year, the request goes unanswered while the relocation proceeds regardless.
