Virgin Media O2 Could Cut Up to 4,000 Jobs. The Only Number So Far Comes From One Insider.
Estimated reading time: 4 minutes
In short. Virgin Media O2 is planning to make a substantial share of its roughly 16,000-strong UK workforce redundant, Sky News reported on 31 October 2026, with one insider putting the figure at up to 4,000 roles [[1]]. The company declined to comment [[2]]. The ledger logs 4,000 as ANNOUNCED and proposed: the number comes from an unnamed source, the plan has not been put to staff as a formal proposal, and nobody has yet lost a job. It is also the first telecoms row on this ledger, which is a gap in our own coverage that this piece starts to close.
What has been reported
Sky News's city editor reported on Saturday that Virgin Media O2, owned jointly by Liberty Global and Telefonica, intends to cut a substantial share of its workforce in the coming months [[1]]. One insider suggested up to 4,000 jobs could be affected, about a quarter of the roughly 16,000 people the company employs in the UK. The cuts are expected to fall mostly on roles that do not deal with customers, alongside changes already under way in senior leadership and a review of the company's contractors and suppliers [[1]][[2]].
The precise number is not settled. One source told Sky that "the final numbers on cost reduction are still moving around" [[1]]. The Communications Workers Union and Prospect have reportedly been briefed on some of the plans [[2]].
Why the company is cutting
The report ties the cuts to Virgin Media O2's debt, which stands at around GBP22 billion [[1]][[2]]. In September the Financial Times reported, and ISPreview followed up, that the two shareholders were preparing a proposal for around GBP600 million of cost cuts, through a mix of job losses and lower capital spending [[3]]. The company has not confirmed that target. AI is not mentioned in any of the coverage this ledger has read, and the row records it as not raised.
How the ledger logs it
The row is graded ANNOUNCED, the weaker of this ledger's two grades, because the figure comes from a media report citing unnamed sources. No filing, official statistic or company statement carries it yet. Its status is proposed: no consultation has been opened publicly and no individual roles have been placed at risk. The ledger logs it at 4,000, the only figure anyone has given, and that is a ceiling. It will be corrected in place if the company publishes a different number.
Virgin Media O2 has already put roles at risk once this year. In January the company told around 300 staff in its Fixed Wholesale and Customer Delivery teams that their roles were at risk, after its fibre joint venture passed 2.5 million homes; a spokesperson said the changes "would result in some exits" and that the final number could be lower if staff moved into other roles [[4]]. This ledger missed that at the time. It is now logged as its own row, backdated to 14 January, with its outcome still unknown.
What happens next
Virgin Media O2 reports its third-quarter results on Tuesday 3 November. Sky expects a cost-reduction target to be confirmed then, though it may be framed as a sum of money with no headcount attached [[1]]. If the company gives a number of roles, this row moves to that number and the grade moves with it. If it gives only a savings target, the 4,000 stays logged as one insider's estimate, and the ledger keeps checking until a figure appears on the record.
