Sayers Closed 19 Bakeries on Merseyside and Cut 100 Jobs in August. This Ledger Took Ten Weeks to Notice.

In short. S&PB Retail Ltd, trading as Sayers and Poundbakery, closed 19 underperforming shops concentrated on Merseyside at the end of August 2026 with around 100 redundancies, citing changing shopping habits, falling footfall and rising costs [[1]][[2]]. More shops shut than the company had announced, with no clean figure for how many more [[3]]. On 15 September the company fell into administration, recorded in a London Gazette notice this ledger never searched for until this week [[4]]. A pre-pack sale has since secured 48 shops and more than 400 jobs under new ownership [[5]]. AI was not cited anywhere.

A bakery chain that outlived two world wars, just not this year

Sayers was founded in Liverpool in 1912 and, at its peak, ran close to 170 shops and cafes across the north-west of England. By this August it was down to around 91, trading under its own name and the discount Poundbakery brand it launched in 2010, and describing itself as the largest independent retail baker in the region [[1]][[2]]. On 21 August 2026 the company told staff it would close 19 of those shops, almost all of them on Merseyside, at a cost of around 100 jobs out of roughly 800 employed across the business [[1]][[2]]. The stated reasons were a change in customer shopping habits, reduced high street footfall, and operating costs that inflation had pushed up faster than the company could pass them on to customers [[1]]. Nobody at Sayers mentioned AI, automation or technology. Nobody needed to: this is the same arithmetic of empty pavements and thin margins that has closed high street shops in Britain for a decade.

The 19 shops were not the end of it

Within weeks, the closures had gone further than the company's own announcement. By mid-September, trade reporting found more than 30 Sayers and Poundbakery shops permanently shut, against the 19 the company had named on 21 August [[3]]. Staff affected by the additional closures reported being owed wages for hours already worked, which the company said it could not pay directly; claims were instead routed through the government's Redundancy Payments Service [[3]]. No outlet has published a clean figure for how many jobs this second wave of closures cost beyond the original 100, and this ledger will not invent one. The 100 logged here is the number the company itself gave for the 19 shops it named; it is very likely an understatement of the total by the time administrators were called in, and that gap is recorded rather than smoothed over.

Administration, then a rescue, in the space of a month

Gareth Harris and James Woodhead of RSM UK Restructuring Advisory LLP, and Richard Oddy of Azets Holdings Ltd, were appointed joint administrators of S&PB Retail Ltd on 15 September 2026 [[4]][[5]]. A London Gazette Appointment of Administrators notice confirms the date, the company and the case number, filed in the Business and Property Courts of England and Wales [[4]]. Unlike some of the collapses this ledger has logged this autumn, this one did not end in a total wind-down. The administrators secured a pre-pack sale of the business to Leeds-based David Wood Craft Bakery Ltd, which has kept 48 shops trading and preserved more than 400 jobs across shops, distribution and head office [[5]]. Set against a company that employed around 800 people in August, that leaves a gap of roughly 350 to 400 jobs between what existed before the closures began and what the buyer took on, a gap this ledger cannot break down precisely between the logged 100, the unquantified further closures, and ordinary administration attrition, so it logs only the one figure it can source cleanly.

Why this took ten weeks

A London Gazette notice naming the administrators, the company and the date has existed since 21 September 2026. National retail and bakery trade press covered the original 19-shop closure in August and the administration in September. None of it reached this ledger until a deliberate second-pass sweep of regional and sector trade press this week turned up the Gazette notice directly. That is the same pattern behind two other backlog pieces this ledger has published in the past three days, on Claire's UK and Ireland and The Original Factory Shop: a real, documented, number-bearing event sitting in the public record for weeks before anyone searching for it found it. The purpose of logging it now, instead of letting a ten-week-old story quietly age out of relevance, is the same reason this ledger exists at all: a loss that happened in August is not less true in November.

How the ledger logs it

A loss of 100, graded REPORTED, status departed, dated 21 August 2026 (the date of the company's own closure announcement, the event this row actually records). The REPORTED grade rests on the London Gazette's confirmation of the administration that followed, the same treatment this ledger gives any jobs figure that sits alongside a statutory notice rather than resting on press coverage alone. The further closures beyond the original 19, and the precise scale of the gap between August's headcount and the buyer's rescued 400, are not logged as a number, because no source gives one.

What happens next

Companies House should in time show S&PB Retail Ltd's administration formally closed and David Wood Craft Bakery Ltd's ownership of the 48 surviving shops on the public record. If a clearer figure ever emerges for the shops closed beyond the original 19, or for the staff owed unpaid wages, this row will be corrected in place rather than left to stand on an understatement.
